The Children's Bookshop was established in Christchurch in 1976. Originally a small, corner bookshop in Beckenham, it has, over the years grown and moved to its current location in Victoria St. The Dorothy Butler Bookshop in Ponsonby, Auckland was purchased in 1999 and The Children's Bookshop Ltd became a chain of two. In November 2009, the name of the Ponsonby store was changed to The Dorothy Butler Children's Bookshop, a tribute to the contribution that Dorothy has made to children's literature in New Zealand and in recognition of the esteem in which she is held.

Part of each shop is devoted to educational toys, games, puzzles, gifts for babies and an extensive range of puppets which can often be matched to book characters.
The staff pride themselves on taking the time to establish the needs of you, the customer, and being able to help you find that perfect book or gift. We enjoy the challenge of identifying the "red book with the bull on the cover" that you remember from your childhood and sourcing it for you if it is still in print. We are not constrained by the stock on the shelf, this is just the beginning. We have the resources and expertise to trace titles and our special order service gives you access to the majority of in print books in English worldwide. Our policy is to under promise and over deliver. If we cannot get a book, we will tell you. If we can source it, we will give you a realistic delivery time and make every effort to surprise you with early delivery.
If you are unable to come to the shops, we are happy to mail goods to you. You can contact us by phone, fax, email or, of course, you can order on line.
